Bicycle and Pedestrian

When is this applicable for your project?

The Colorado Department of Transportation shall include the needs of bicyclists and pedestrians in the planning, design, operation and maintenance of transportation facilities as a necessary component of all programs and activities. Any decision of the Department to not accommodate the needs of bicyclists and pedestrians in the planning, design, and operation of transportation facilities shall be documented prior to finalizing the decision.

What are the Roles and Responsibilities in this arena?

In addition to CDOT’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Section, each region has a Bicycle and Pedestrian Engineering Representative to act as a subject matter expert in the development and operation of bicycle and pedestrian facilities. These individuals should be consulted early in the scoping process to help identify the needs and requirements of accommodating bicyclists and pedestrians.

Red Flags

Failure to identify Bike/Ped needs or opportunities as early as possible can lead to design additions and the associated schedule and budget issues.
