Region 3 Director’s Dispatch

Friday, August 7, 2020

Dear Region 3 employees,
I’d like to share some of our photos from the 111 Fire near I-70 in South Canyon, just west of Glenwood Springs. The wildfire started on Wednesday and firefighters have been working hard to contain it. Crews included sixty-five personnel, one Type 3 helicopter, three hand crews, and several engines. Air support and water drops from the Pine Gulch Fire in western Garfield County were a big help. CDOT has been able to contribute to the effort by providing a lane closure on westbound I-70 in that area to help firefighters, as well as helping to provide water for the fire crews. The fire was 85 percent contained on Thursday night, at nine acres, with the right-hand lane of westbound I-70 closed during the day to allow crews to work the steep rugged terrain mopping up any existing hot spots. As of this afternoon, the fire was under control enough that we could end our lane closure west of Glenwood Springs. All updates for the 111 Fire are posted at garfieldcounty.net.

Further west in Region 3, the Pine Gulch Fire continues to burn. That fire is located north of Grand Junction and northwest of DeBeque. As of today’s morning update, there has been moderate fire activity and primarily on the northwest and northeast corners of the fire as it worked its way downhill in gullies and ridges. The fire currently is at 13,074 acres and 0% contained. The latest info can still be found at the InciWeb (Incident Information System) and the fire’s Facebook page.

Have a healthy and safe weekend,

Mike
