CDOT announces $660 million in projects for bidding

STATEWIDE—CDOT announced today that more than $660 million in projects across the state will be put out to bid by the end of January 2020. This investment represents CDOT's next step in ongoing efforts to continue improving the safety and asset condition of transportation infrastructure across Colorado.

Consistent with best practices for optimizing the efficiency of the procurement process, next year's construction list will be advertised over the coming months to be ready for next summer. The program of projects investing in rural counties across the state represents approximately 40% of CDOT's total plan.

On May 17, CDOT announced a reset of its planning process to include a comprehensive and data-driven look at the impacts of transportation assets across Colorado, as well as a streamlined conversation with citizens across Colorado about how transportation affects their lives. This process is taking place on an accelerated timeline.

CDOT is currently implementing a robust series of asset repair and maintenance projects that were identified last year. These projects range from repairing the I-25 "south gap" near Colorado Springs, to resurfacing projects on segments of I-70, to safety projects across the state that yield improvements like wider shoulders and passing lines, and visibility improvements through clearer striping.

Many of the repair and maintenance projects also support CDOT's "Whole System - Whole Safety" program. Examples of projects include but are not limited to:

• adding rumble strips to US Highway 36, from Estes to Boulder, to help keep drivers on the road;
• adding cable rail to I-25 at Colorado Highway 14 to prevent crossover accidents;
• adding trucker chain-up areas across Southwest Colorado;
• upgrading traffic signals at CO 8, CO 58 and CO 93 near Golden;
• upgrading the US 50-CO 92 intersection near Delta to reduce accidents and improve traffic flow; and
• many more statewide, as reflected in the table below.

The majority of next year's projects are funded through CDOT's 2020 fiscal year asset management program, approved by the Transportation Commission in 2016, and codified in the 2020 budget approved by the Transportation Commission in 2019. These projects are supplemented by projects funded with 2020 safety programs, and through 2019 fiscal year funding provided by Senate Bill 17-267, Concering the Sustainability of Rural Colorado. Major projects that span multiple years are using budget from the future fiscal year that CDOT anticipates them to expend. This is consistent with CDOT's newly-implemented cash management strategy to put taxpayers' dollars to use as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Strategic projects identified through CDOT's new planning process will be added to this list and supported with the SB-267 transfers and General Fund contributions provided by the legislature in the 2019 session. CDOT anticipates more projects to come.
