Several Kudos for Boulder Canyon Opening

Reaction was swift and very positive when CDOT reopened SH 119 from Boulder through Boulder Canyon to Nederland at 5 p.m. on Oct. 6 following its closure due to flood damage on Sept. 12.  CDOT had established a target reopening of mid- to late-October for the corridor; the reopening at least one week early was attributed to good weather and Sema Construction's around-the-clock emergency repair efforts.

Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper, who was on hand to officially commemorate the reopening very early on Monday, Oct. 7, said CDOT "moved heaven and earth, mostly earth, to get this highway open."

Following are some samples of e-mail feedback following the opening:

  • From Ken Cohen of Eldora:  "Thank you for all your amazing hard work and long, long hours in opening Boulder Canyon.  My wife and I were prepared to take alternate routes through at least the end of the month."
  • From Roxanne Hause of Estes Park:  "Thank you to all CDOT for the hard work being done to get roads open from Estes Park to the Front Range.  I was so grateful to be able to get to Estes Park on Sept. 18 after being away for work for five weeks.  Your fast work on SH 7 (from Raymond to Estes Park from the south) was so greatly appreciated, as is all of the work you are currently doing.  I don't know how to say thank you enough!"
  • From Caitlin McQuade, who lives in Fourmile Canyon west of Boulder:  "Thank you for finishing so quickly.  You guys are awesome!"
  • From Gretchen Spiro of Nederland:  "Wow, 119 Boulder Canyon open ahead of schedule!  Great!  Thank you!"
  • From Stephanie Miller of Nederland:  "Thank you CDOT.  I am so very grateful for your hard work and efforts to repair and reopen Boulder Canyon/SH 119.  I am really impressed with CDOT's hard work and quick response to repair Colorado's roads in the face of extraordinary damage.  We are very appreciative of your excellent work!"
  • From Tim Kane of Boulder:  "Thank you very much for the hard work and long hours in order to open the access to Boulder Canyon."
  • From Chuck Gray of Boulder:  "I would like to commend CDOT and particularly the on-site personnel on the rapid repair of the extensive Boulder Canyon damage.  As an engineer, though not Civil, I have a reasonable appreciation of the time and machinery involved in construction.  The speed and completeness of this repair are truly amazing.  Thank you."
  • From Becky Landkammer:  "Thank you so much for fixing Boulder Canyon.  We drove it today and can't even imagine how much work it took.  My girls and I can see my husband more each day now.  Nice work CDOT!"
  • From Nadya Shaw:  "A big thank-you to the CDOT team and road construction crews for their terrific work on restoring Boulder Canyon ahead of schedule.  From a grateful Nederland family."
