Walk & Bike to School Colorado!

UPDATE: Bike to School Day materials were mailed in early March, prior to school closures due to the escalation COVID-19. Per, this is a time for our communities to focus on our health in a different way. We hope many will consider holding onto mailed posters and stickers for future use. Please also refer to the mailed welcome letter for information on our open funding period beginning in August. Email [email protected] to be added to our e-newsletter and to get useful updates about this opportunity. For more information and recommendations for social distancing, please refer to

Bike to School Day Materials Orders

Exciting news! This year, we will be automatically mailing a free Bike to School Day materials packet consisting of an informational letter, two double-sided posters in English and Spanish, and approximately 200 stickers to all Colorado public elementary, PK/K-8, and PK/K-12 schools. More materials and links to other great resources can also be found for download here.

The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) encourages schools across Colorado to participate in Walk to School Day (in October) and Bike to School Day (in May) each year.

Walk and Bike to School Days are great opportunities to galvanize visibility for walking and bicycling to and from school. They are wonderful times to get kids out practicing their skills and safety rules and for parents and caregivers to experience how safe and fun it is for their child(ren) to walk and bike to and from school.

October is Colorado Pedestrian Month, making any day in October a great choice for promoting walking and walkability. There is always an internationally promoted date, typically the first Wednesday in October: October 7 in 2020.

May is National Bike Month (although Colorado celebrates it in June) and a great way for kids to end the year and head off to a summer of bicycling fun!

Start planning now for Bike to School Day on May 6, 2020, and Walk to School Day on Wednesday, October 7, 2020! Register your event at!

About Walk to School and Bike to School

Schools can register their Walk and Bike to School events at

Walk (and Bike) to School Colorado is the vision that communities create safe, friendly neighborhoods for all children to walk or bicycle to and from school. Learn how to organize a Walk (or Bike) to School Day, a Colorado Walking Wednesday program, or a Walk to School program in your neighborhood.

The idea is simple: Parents, teachers, and neighbors actively commute with their children on Walk and Bike to School Days.

Walking and biking to school can be fun and energizing. It gets the day off to a healthy start while renewing community spirit with friends, family, and classmates.

For most communities though, one day isn't enough. Children should be able to walk safely to and from school every day. If this vision were to become a reality, the community could see a variety of benefits, including better sidewalks, safer street crossings, and improved driver, cyclist, and pedestrian behavior.

Take the leap to launch a Walk or Bike to School Day!
