US 85 Resurfacing
between CO 60 and CO 66

August 23, 2023 Update

CO 60 closed periodically at US 85 for asphalt paving

Colorado Highway 60 will close periodically when asphalt paving operations are occurring near the U.S. Highway 85 / CO 60 intersection.

This closure is necessary for crew and driver safety. The CO 60 closure will only be in place when active construction is in the immediate area. The restriction will lift at the end of each workday. Paving in this area is expected to be complete in early September.

The signed detour route will direct traffic to County Road 42 to bypass the work area.

About the Project

The Colorado Department of Transportation started making improvements to US 85 between CO 66 and CO 60 in May 2023.

Over three miles of northbound and southbound US 85 between CO 66 and CO 60 (Mile Points 250.5 – 254.0) are receiving a new asphalt surface. More than half of the planned resurfacing work is now complete.

This summer, the northbound US 85 left-turn lane at CO 60 was extended and intersection safety improvements were constructed at Marion Avenue. A center median was added at Marion Avenue to limit access to right-in, right-out on all approaches except northbound US 85 where left turns will still be possible onto Marion Avenue.

Around 25,000 vehicles a day use this section of US 85 and will benefit from a smoother driving surface once the project is complete. Asphalt Specialties Company was awarded a $5.1 million contract to construct the improvements. Project completion is anticipated in November.

Traffic Impacts

Drivers should slow down as they approach the work zone, drive with caution, allow extra space between vehicles, and give themselves extra travel time. Traffic impacts include:
  • General work hours are Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. – 5 p.m., extended hours and weekend work may be necessary
  • Lane closures are utilized on weekdays
  • Expect trucks entering and exiting the work zone
  • Traffic will be held at intersections and driveways while equipment passes through to ensure product quality and safe operations
  • Temporary rough riding surfaces may be present until paving is complete
  • Speed limit reductions will be in place as needed
  • All work is weather-dependent, and the schedule is subject to change
