US 40 & CO 394 Bridge Repairs in Craig & Hayden

Expect an eastbound left lane and left shoulder closure on the US 40 bridge over the Yampa River (MP 105.5) 24 hours a day.

  • Monday - Friday: expect a northbound left lane closure on the US 40 bridge over Fortification Creek (MP 91.22) from 6:30 am -8:00 pm.

Project Facts

  • Location: Various locations on US Highway 40 between Craig and Hayden in Routt County

Now about halfway complete, this project will repair five bridges—five on US Highway 40, and one on US 385—to preserve and extend the structures' lives.

Specific improvements include:

  • repairing and upgrading five bridges along US 40 and CO 394;
  • applying new waterproof materials to some of the bridges, and repairing the concrete along the bridge walls; and
  • asphalt paving.


Craig Bridge Repairs

  • Timeline: March – July
  • Phase 1: Complete and ahead of schedule, with the exception of striping
  • The bridges on US 40 are 40% complete.
  • The bridge on CO 394 is 40% complete.
  • Phase 2 will include rehabilitation work, replacing slabs, placing and excavating maholes/inlets and more.
  • September or October: Crews will perform reinforcement work around the bridge abutments.

Hayden Bridge Repairs

  • Timeline: July – September
  • Work hours: 7 a.m. - 5 p.m., Monday - Friday, with no weekend or night work expected
  • The bridge in east Hayden is 95% complete.
  • Crews will stripe lanes at the East Hayden Bridge.
  • In July, they'll begin work on the West Hayden Bridge.

Travel Impacts

  • As of June 6, expect a narrowed single-lane of travel in each direction on US 40 on the bridge between CO 13 and Lincoln Street in Craig. Crews are shifting traffic to the other side of the bridge during repairs.
  • Speed limits reduced to 25 mph or 30 mph
  • Vehicles 12 feet and wider will be restricted on some bridges.
  • Expect single-lane traffic with up to 10-minute traffic delays during peak travel times and flaggers directing traffic.
