Crews on Aug. 22, 2017, will begin work to improve the Johnson Tunnel—the eastbound portion of the Eisenhower-Johnson Memorial Tunnels on Interstate 70, in Summit and Clear Creek counties. This project is scheduled to be completed in mid-November 2017.

Specifically, work includes replacing the tunnel's concrete barrier rail, walkway and handrail, and inlet cleaning and maintenance in the westbound Eisenhower Tunnel.

Traffic Impacts

  • Expect a single-lane closure through the length of the Johnson Tunnel.
    • Full closures may last for up to 15 minutes each, depending on traffic volumes.
  • Expect a single-lane closure in the westbound Eisenhower Tunnel near the project's end in early November.


  • Working hours: 8 p.m. - 6 a.m., Sundays through Thursdays through mid-November
