I-70 Eastbound Twin Tunnels (Completed)
The Twin Tunnels Design and Construction Project was created to alleviate congestion along the I-70 Mountain Corridor. The project included work to expand eastbound I-70 from Floyd Hill to Idaho Springs, including the eastbound side of the Twin Tunnels. In addition, the project called for the reconstruction of the bridge over Clear Creek in order to diminish the curve at Hidden Valley.
Work is now complete, there are three lanes from east Idaho Springs to the bottom of Floyd Hill and eastbound I-70 will begin moving through the widened tunnel. It is estimated that adding a third lane to eastbound I-70 will save Sunday travelers about $11.4 million in travel time and fuel costs in 2014. Read the FAQs about this work.
