US 85 and Weld County Road 44 Interchange Newsletter

March 29, 2024 Update

New traffic pattern in place at US 85 and County Road 44

A major project milestone was achieved today when the new northbound U.S. Highway 85 ramps at Weld County Road 44 opened to traffic. The new ramps and bridge over the Union Pacific Railroad provide an immediate safety benefit by eliminating the at-grade vehicle crossing of the railroad tracks.

Drivers should expect periodic lane closures and traffic shifts on the ramps and WCR 44 near US 85 this spring. Daily lane closures will also continue on US 85.

County Road 44 east of Niobrara Boulevard will close for up to one month starting on or after April 2

WCR 44 from east of Niobrara Boulevard to WCR 35 will close to all through traffic starting on or after April 2 for approximately one month, pending approval. This closure will stay in place 24/7 until the road reconstruction work is complete. This work is weather-dependent, and the schedule may change. Message boards on the corridor will reflect any schedule changes.

The signed detour route will direct drivers to use WCR 42 and WCR 35. Access to Martin Produce and businesses in the Weld County Industrial Park will be available from the west side of the closure through the new interchange.

About the Project

Jalisco International was awarded a $28-million contract to construct an interchange at US 85 and WCR 44 in Peckham. Work on the interchange started in early 2022, and construction completion is expected in spring 2024.

The new interchange improves safety, eliminates interaction between roadway traffic and the Union Pacific Railroad tracks, and provides efficient access control.

Major project features include:

  • Two new bridges to carry WCR 44 over US 85 and UPRR tracks
  • Roundabout at southbound US 85 ramps / WCR 44 intersection
  • Intersection improvements at WCR 44 and Niobrara Boulevard
  • Permanent closure of WCR 33 at US 85 and UPRR

Other Traffic Impacts

Drivers should slow down as they approach the work zone, drive with caution, allow extra space between vehicles and give themselves extra travel time.

Traffic impacts include:
  • General work hours are Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. – 5 p.m., extended hours and weekend work may be necessary.
  • Lane closures on US 85 are possible on weekdays from 7 a.m. - 5 p.m.
  • Expect trucks entering and exiting the work zone and intermittent flagger control on WCR 44 for site access.
  • An oversized-vehicle width restriction of 11 feet is in place on US 85.
  • All work is weather-dependent, and the schedule is subject to change.
