US 50/CO 115 Roundabout in Penrose

Project Announcement

Starting next week, the Colorado Department of Transportation will begin a traffic and roadway improvement project at the intersection of U.S. Highway 50 and Colorado Highway 115 in the Town of Penrose in Fremont County. The goal of the project is to improve driver safety and traffic flow by adding a roundabout. The roundabout will be on the south side of CO 115 and will intersect with the eastbound US 50 on and off ramps. No changes will be made to the westbound US 50 on and off ramps to CO 115.

Work includes building a temporary detour from the eastbound US 50 off ramp to CO 115 to route traffic, constructing the roundabout, adding a concrete island and wide turn area, and installing lighting and traffic signs. The roundabout was selected as a proven safety measure that will also provide improved traffic operations that could otherwise not be accomplished at this intersection. Pyramid Construction, Inc. of Colorado Springs has been selected as the project’s prime contractor.

Location and limits of the US 50 & CO 115 roundabout project in Penrose.

Location & Schedule

The project is located at the intersection of US 50 and CO 115 in the Town of Penrose. The work zone on US 50 extends eastbound from Mile Point 285.3 to MP 285.8, and in both directions of CO 115 from MP 12.86 to MP 14.01.

Project hours will be 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday with extended hours in the summer months. Some overnight and weekend work may take place later in the project. CDOT anticipates full completion by October.

Traffic Impacts

Motorists and area residents can expect the following impacts during construction:
  • Single lane closures on eastbound US 50 and in both directions of CO 115 within the work zone during working hours
  • An onsite temporary detour will be in place from the eastbound US 50 off ramp to CO 115 during construction of the roundabout
  • 24/7 traffic shifts, narrowed lanes and reduced speeds will exist
  • Signs and construction devices will be present to alert the public to the work zone, closures and restrictions
