Starting next week, the Colorado Department of Transportation will begin a traffic and roadway improvement project at the intersection of U.S. Highway 50 and Colorado Highway 115 in the Town of Penrose in Fremont County. The goal of the project is to improve driver safety and traffic flow by adding a roundabout. The roundabout will be on the south side of CO 115 and will intersect with the eastbound US 50 on and off ramps. No changes will be made to the westbound US 50 on and off ramps to CO 115.
Work includes building a temporary detour from the eastbound US 50 off ramp to CO 115 to route traffic, constructing the roundabout, adding a concrete island and wide turn area, and installing lighting and traffic signs. The roundabout was selected as a proven safety measure that will also provide improved traffic operations that could otherwise not be accomplished at this intersection. Pyramid Construction, Inc. of Colorado Springs has been selected as the project’s prime contractor.
