Coloradans Blow Before Driving

In 2018, CDOT partnered with BACtrack to provide Coloradans with an unprecedented discount on personal breathalyzers. CDOT’s Coloradans Blow Before Driving campaign kicked off the discount with a “beer and yoga” event designed to get people thinking about using personal breathalyzers to understand their BACs at everyday drinking events.

Between July and September 2018, 2,866 Coloradans purchased discounted BACtrack breathalyzers. A post-purchase survey found that 77 percent of respondents shared their breathalyzer with others. The survey also revealed that respondents who “never” drive after consuming alcohol increased from 16 percent to 32 percent since receiving their breathalyzer.

In partnership with Responsibility.org, 200 breathalyzer units were distributed at no cost to Coloradans aged 21 to 34, encouraging breathalyzer use among young adults. More than one thousand additional Coloradans had the opportunity to try out a breathalyzer test at various events across the state, including the Colorado Springs Beer Fest, the Colorado Renaissance Festival, Taste of Colorado, Velorama, Film on the Rocks at Red Rocks, Geeks Who Drink trivia nights and a Colorado Rockies game.

Since Coloradans to Blow Before Driving launched, BACtrack data shows that Colorado ranks first in per capita breathalyzer use, more than four times the national average.
