¡Felices Fiestas! CDOT expands holiday DUI messaging via partnerships with Spanish media

Traffic Safety Pulse News

The holiday season is known for being merry and bright, but it is also known for being deadly when it comes to impaired driving. Unfortunately, every holiday season, lives are lost on Colorado roads due to impaired drivers.

As part of CDOT’s ongoing efforts to prevent impaired driving during the holidays, collaborations with Spanish-language television networks Telemundo and Univision were recently announced. CDOT is also working with El Comercio de Colorado and Tu Casa publications as part of this campaign.

According to Traffic Safety Communications Manager Sam Cole, “Colorado Hispanics experience disproportionate risks of dying or being injured in traffic crashes compared to non-Hispanic whites. The goal of these in-language campaigns is to increase awareness of the dangers of impaired driving during the holidays and to save lives.”

The latest data (2020) shows the rate of fatalities per 100,000 population due to motor vehicle crashes in Colorado, by race and ethnicity, was 12.3 for individuals of Hispanic origin versus 10.5 for non-Hispanic whites.

Campaign messaging includes Facebook Live events and digital banner/video messages designed to encourage viewers to celebrate responsibly and remind them that while we all do our best to stay safe from COVID-19, it’s important to also stay safe on our roads.
