Photo booth DUI prevention tactic

In partnership with Blake Street Tavern in Denver and Legends Rock Bar in Colorado Springs, CDOT helped increase awareness about the dangers of impaired driving. CDOT arranged a photo booth on site at each bar to deliver its DUI prevention message in a unique and engaging way. The last image in each series of photos showed bar customers at a drastically different location — jail. The surprise mugshot emphasized how quickly a person’s night can be altered by the choice to drive impaired and serve as a creative reminder to always arrange a sober ride.

DUI enforcement periods and summer fatalities

CDOT recently joined with Colorado State Patrol and local law enforcement agencies for the Summer Strikeout enforcement from July 16-19. Up next is the Labor Day Weekend enforcement from Aug. 18 – Sept. 6. During last year’s Labor Day Weekend DUI enforcement period, 104 participating law enforcement agencies arrested 694 impaired drivers.

This year, there were 34 impaired driving fatalities from June 1 to July 13 on Colorado roads. In 2020, impaired driving fatalities for June, July and August totaled 67, putting Colorado on track to have just as deadly of a summer season this year if impaired driving fatalities continue at the current rate.
