Car Seats Colorado's Back-to-School Safety Checklist

Every parent goes through a mental checklist before sending their kids back to school after a long summer — school supplies, new outfits, class schedules. It’s a lot to keep track of.

This year, Car Seats Colorado wants to remind parents that this is a great time to double-check that their child is properly secured in their booster seat or seat belt. And even if you’re familiar with proper fit and installation, it’s important to clearly communicate with carpool groups, grandparents or anyone else who might be giving your child a ride to school.

To help out and ensure your child’s safety, here is a simple checklist from our child passenger safety experts:

Booster Seats

  • Shoulder belt should fit snugly across the shoulder (not across the neck or face).
  • Lap belt should sit flat across the upper thighs (not the stomach).

Seatbelts

  • Shoulder belt should fit snugly across the shoulder.
  • Lap belt should lie flat across the upper thighs.
  • Back should rest squarely against the seat.
  • Knees bend comfortably at the edge of the seat.
  • All children under age 13 should sit in the back seat.
