The Safety Analysis group is responsible for supporting the ongoing statewide efforts to improve traffic safety along all public roadways in Colorado through strategic data-driven approaches.  Highway Safety Manual concepts are frequently applied by the group through the use of predictive crash models and crash modification factors.  The group administers two major programs (HSIP and FSM) that are devoted to improving safety through the reduction of crashes, most notably those that cause serious injuries or fatalities.

The importance of accurate data collection and reporting cannot be overemphasized. Many individuals and agencies, both from the public and private sector, use and rely on information gathered on crash reports. That information leads to improved roadway safety at the local, state, and federal levels and save lives.

Our purpose is to: provide highway/work zone safety and traffic operations-related input for transportation planning and project development; provide traffic engineering support; develop and maintain traffic engineering specifications, standards and related publications; administer statewide policies on guide signing practices and procedures, as well as those governing pavement marking practices; develop and maintain the centralized library of CDOT sign layout templates; evaluate and approve traffic control devices for the CDOT Approved Products List; and administer the CDOT Flagger Program.

Our purpose is to work with third parties and our external customers to achieve agreements that preserve the safety and operations of our transportation system and support delivery of CDOT's construction program while enabling business to thrive and improve Colorado's economic climate. The unit also is the state expertise in speed limit setting and conducts speed limit and traffic control device studies throughout the state to establish and catalog speeds and traffic control devices on Colorado's highways.
