Toll Rates/Violations

How do I pay a toll?
All tolls are collected by electronic toll collection. This means no stopping; no tollbooth congestion; and no change is needed. Simply drive under the electronic toll reader and the toll is deducted automatically from an active ExpressToll account. License Plate Toll was introduced in 2009 as another option to pay a toll. License Plate Toll customers are billed for their travel.  For those vehicles without an ExpressToll transponder or new sticker tag, cameras will photograph the front and rear license plates and a bill will be sent. It’s important to note that License Plate Toll customers will be billed at a higher rate.

Do I need a transponder or new sticker tag to access the lanes?

To use any of the Colorado Express Lanes, you will need an ExpressToll account and pass. An ExpressToll customer service representative can help you decide which pass is best for you, based on your particular needs. For example, the Switchable HOV Transponder is the only pass that allows you to choose the HOV option and use the lanes for free, but if you typically drive alone, you can use a sticker tag or standard pass.

Remember, if you choose not to use the pass, you will be billed through a License Plate Toll. A bill will be sent to the registered owner of the vehicle and you will pay a higher toll rate based on how far you travel in the Express Lane.

Can I use my E-470/Northwest Parkway/EXpressToll transponder or new sticker tag on the I-25 lanes?
The Express Lanes pass is fully compatible with that of E-470 and the Northwest Parkway. Carpools using the HOV Lane are not charged a toll. However, the new Express Lanes that are opening up in other parts of the state will require a Switchable HOV Transponder in order to use the carpool option and use the lanes for free. An ExpressToll customer service representative can help you decide which pass is best for you, based on your particular needs.

How much will I pay for a toll?
Prices for the toll lanes change based upon the time of day. The varying toll rate manages traffic so that Express Lanes provide a reliable travel time. Electronic message signs and other static signs clearly display the current toll price prior to entrance points.

Below is a toll schedule for the HOV/Express Lanes. Vehicles with four or more axles have to pay the $25 fee in addition to the base toll rate. This toll schedule could change if it is found to be insufficient at providing reliable, uncongested travel times on the facility. Those who do not have an ExpressToll transponder or new sticker tag will be charged a surcharge to the established toll of about 25% or more.

Please note that the I-25 Express Lanes are closed for maintenance activities from 3:00AM-5:00AM and from 10:00AM-Noon each weekday, and are open in the northbound direction on weekends.

How will I know what the toll rate is?
Toll rates vary by time of day and are posted on signs in advance of the entrance to the lanes to enable drivers to make a choice of whether or not to enter the lanes. However, it's important to note that a vehicle is charged a toll when it crosses the toll collection point at 58th Avenue, not when it enters the facility. The toll rate at the time when a vehicle passes through the toll collection point is the amount the vehicle will be charged.

Toll prices vary throughout the day to keep traffic flowing as usual for HOV lane users.

What happens if I get caught using the lanes without a transponder or new sticker tag?

License Plate Toll was introduced in 2009 as another option to pay a toll. License Plate Toll customers are billed for their travel in the lane marked "Toll". For those vehicles without an ExpressToll pass, cameras will photograph the front and rear license plates and a bill will be sent, but it is important to note that those who do not have an ExpressToll pass will pay a higher amount.
