Construction starts soon on CO 66 and WCR 21
safety improvement project
The Colorado Department of Transportation will make safety improvements at the intersection of Colorado Highway 66 and Weld County Road 21 starting this month. During the week of Feb. 19, crews will mobilize to the site, place erosions control measures and place advanced traffic control. Periodic lane closures with alternating traffic are possible from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday.
This project will improve safety by adding left turn lanes to all intersection approaches. The intersection will be resurfaced with asphalt pavement to provide a smoother riding surface and increase the longevity of the highway. Work includes reconstructing drainage and irrigation systems. WCR 21 stop signs will be upgraded to flashing light displays for improved visibility.
Martin Marietta Materials is the prime contractor. Project completion is anticipated in late summer. The construction schedule is weather-dependent and subject to change.

Traffic Impacts
Drivers should slow down as they approach the work zone, drive with caution, allow extra space between vehicles, and give themselves extra travel time. The following impacts are expected:
- Intermittent lane closures, traffic shifts and alternating traffic
- Flaggers may be present, be prepared to stop
- Delays of up to ten minutes through the work zone
- Detour routes will be signed if temporary road closures are necessary
- Traffic will be held at intersections and driveways while equipment passes through to ensure product quality and safe operations
- Temporary rough riding surfaces may be present until paving is finished
- Speed limit reductions and width restrictions will be in place as needed
- Watch for vehicles entering and exiting the work zone
- Access to all properties will be maintained during the project
