CO 66 Culverts West of Platteville Newsletter

March 25, 2024

CO 66 to close west of Platteville for up to four nights next week

The Colorado Department of Transportation and Edge Contracting are performing critical culvert work on Colorado Highway 66 west of the Town of Platteville. Starting on Tuesday, April 2, CO 66 will close from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. for up to four consecutive nights between Weld County Road 21 and WCR 30 ½.

The signed detour route will direct drivers to use WCR 21, WCR 28 and U.S. Highway 85 to avoid the work area. Access to adjacent properties located within the closed work area will be provided. All other traffic will be required to use the detour while crews perform work within deep trenches across the narrow highway.

Before and after the full closure, flaggers will periodically alternate traffic in a single lane from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m, Monday through Friday. Drivers should plan on travel delays of up to ten minutes. An oversized vehicle width restriction of ten feet is in place.

The construction schedule is weather-dependent and subject to change.

Other Traffic Impacts

In addition to CO 66 overnight closures, flaggers will periodically alternate traffic from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday. Drivers should expect frequent traffic pattern changes and delays of up to ten minutes through the work zone.

Although most of the project is expected to be complete within a few weeks, temporary surfaces may be present until later this summer when the final asphalt material is placed over the new culverts.

CDOT is coordinating traffic control with at least two other projects on the CO 66 corridor between Mead and Platteville this construction season. Links to the other projects are provided on the CO 66 Culverts West of Platteville project web page. Drivers are encouraged to take alternate routes, use extra caution in the work zones, and follow all signs and markings.

About the Project

This project replaces two culverts underneath CO 66 and improves the end sections of a third culvert. Other work includes slope grading and asphalt paving in the immediate area of the two culverts that are replaced. Installing new culverts now will improve the longevity of the highway while addressing deficiencies with the roadside drainage system.

Edge Contracting is the prime contractor. Project completion is anticipated in summer 2024.
