New roundabout improves traffic operations and safety at exit 104

The new roundabout at the Drew Dix Parkway and Interstate 25 west frontage road has transformed mobility and access at exit 104. In early October, the intersection opened in the roundabout configuration. The southbound I-25 off-ramp is the fifth leg of the roundabout.

Recently, the I-25 west frontage road was realigned and resurfaced to tie into the new roundabout. The final asphalt layer will be placed on the frontage road and through the roundabout starting on or after Oct. 19.

More work is planned on Drew Dix Parkway west of the roundabout. The contractor will replace a water pipeline in late October. Surface improvements will follow once underground utility work is complete.

Drivers should expect periodic flagger control and lane shifts while work continues in the work area west of I-25. Please slow down for the cone zone and follow all signs and markings. All work is weather-dependent, and the construction schedule is subject to change.

Bridge work continues east of I-25

Crews are preparing to pour the concrete bridge deck at the north end of the future I-25 east frontage road. All lanes will remain open on I-25 during the work, but drivers should expect more equipment adjacent to the highway and flagger control on the northbound I-25 off-ramp at Dillon Drive.

The bridge and retaining walls are important parts of the new northbound-only frontage road that will provide a direct connection to Drew Dix Parkway. A portion of the frontage road was recently paved.

After the bridge deck cures, concrete bridge approaches and bridge railing will be placed.
SEMA construction recently hosted a construction management class from Colorado State University – Pueblo at the work site. Students were able to observe bridge construction.

Traffic Impacts

Drivers will encounter road work at exit 104. Motorists should slow down as they approach the work zone, drive with caution, allow extra space between vehicles, and give themselves extra travel time. Traffic impacts include:
  • Anticipated work hours will be from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday
  • Infrequent night and weekend work may be necessary for some construction activities
  • Northbound I-25 right shoulder closed 24/7 near MP 104
  • Traffic shifts and temporary changes to the traffic pattern
  • Access to all properties will be maintained during the project

About the Project

CDOT is improving the Drew Dix Parkway/Dillon Drive interchange at I-25 (exit 104). Project benefits include improving traffic operations and mobility between Drew Dix Parkway, Dillon Drive and I-25.

This project constructs a roundabout at the intersection of Drew Dix Parkway and the I-25 west frontage road. The southbound I-25 off-ramp at Drew Dix Parkway will be realigned to utilize the new roundabout. The roundabout design will improve safety by eliminating existing conflicts associated with two closely spaced intersections on the west side of I-25.

A frontage road will be built between Drew Dix Parkway and Dillon Drive on the east side of I-25. This one-way northbound connection will run parallel to I-25 between the existing roundabout at Dillon Drive over I-25 and the Drew Dix Parkway/northbound I-25 on-ramp intersection.

This $10-million project builds on improvements made in 2016 as part of the Dillon Drive Interchange Project. SEMA Construction is the prime contractor. Construction completion is anticipated in fall 2024.
