Eastern Plains Timber Bridge Replacement Newsletter - Oct. 24, 2023

CO 61 bridge construction continues north of Otis

The Colorado Department of Transportation is replacing an old timber bridge on Colorado Highway 61 three miles north of the Town of Otis. The concrete deck for the new bridge was poured last week. The project uses a slide-in bridge construction method, which builds the structure next to the existing bridge on temporary supports.

Pending weather and other conditions, the highway will close for six days in mid-November to demolish the old timber bridge and move the new bridge into place. Slide-in bridge construction allows traffic to continue using the old bridge for as long as possible while the new bridge is built next to it. Bridge approach work will occur after the new bridge is set in the permanent location.

CO 61 shoulder closures and one-lane alternating traffic during daylight hours will continue through fall.
CO 61 bridge girders were placed on a temporary support structure in early October.

CO 61 to close for six days in mid-November for bridge replacement north of Otis

A full closure of CO 61 between County Road 43 and CR 44, which is approximately three miles north of U.S. Highway 34 (1st Avenue), is necessary for six days in mid-November while the old highway bridge is demolished and replaced. The full closure schedule is not available yet and is highly dependent on weather conditions.

The signed detour route for CO 61 will direct drivers to use CO 63 between US 34 in the Town of Akron and Interstate 76 near the City of Sterling.

A vehicle width restriction is in place on CO 61 from MP 2 and 4. No loads over 12 feet wide are permitted through December 15, 2023.
