I-25 Walsenburg Bridge Replacement

Weekly Traffic Impacts & Work Update

Weekly Traffic Impacts - April 14 to April 20

Please be advised of the following traffic impacts, restrictions and planned work for next week for the I-25 Walsenburg Bridge Replacement project in Huerfano County.

Weekday Traffic Impacts

Monday, April 15 to Friday, April 19 - both directions of CO 10 under I-25 - full closure during certain work activities - daytime lane closures, with longer than usual delays during traffic holds, managed by flaggers
  • A full closure of both directions of CO 10 can be expected during certain work activities
  • Notifications will be sent to all stakeholders prior to the implementation of a full closure
  • Daytime lane closures will be taken in both directions of CO 10 during working hours
  • Working hours are half an hour after sunrise to half an hour before sunset, Monday to Friday
  • The lane closures will be longer in duration due to final safety critical girder placement
  • During the closures, alternating directions of traffic will be routed into the open lane by flaggers
  • Motorists can expect traffic holds up to 20 minutes during this girder placement work as the highway is cleared and the remaining girders are lifted by crane and lowered onto the second span of the new southbound I-25 bridge structure
  • The project/closure limits extend from Mile Point 0 to MP .25
  • Flaggers, signs and construction devices are present to alert motorists to work underway, lane or full closures, and other restrictions
  • Caution is advised
  • Construction schedules are weather dependent and subject to change
Work includes driving H-pile beams, placing girders on the second span of the new southbound I-25 bridge, paving slopes, and demobilizing equipment.

  • Both directions of traffic on I-25 are reduced to a single lane within the project limits
  • The lanes have been shifted to the northbound side of I-25 via median crossover detour pavement
  • The project limits extend from MP 51 to MP 49 on I-25 at the approaches to and at Exit 50 in Huerfano County
  • This single lane alignment will remain in place until further notice
  • A width restriction of 12 feet is in place
  • Speeds are reduced to 55 mph
  • The northbound I-25 on and off ramps are open
  • The southbound I-25 on and off ramps are closed (see detail below)
  • Caution is advised
Sunday, April 14 to Saturday, April 20 - 24/7 closure - southbound I-25 on and off ramps
  • The southbound I-25 on and off ramps at Exit 50 are closed, with detour routes in place
  • These ramp closures will remain in place 24/7 for about six months while crews remove and replace the southbound I-25 bridge structure
  • Detour signs will be present alerting motorists to alternate routes

Temporary Playground Closure

Please be advised that the playground located at S. Grant Ave. and Colorado Ave. is closed while crews replace an underground sanitary sewer line.
  • The playground will remain closed until further notice
  • The closure is in place to maintain public safety during underground utility work
  • Fencing and signs are present alerting the public to the closure

General Impacts, Schedule & Scope of Work

  • Work began in March 2023 with expected completion by late 2024
  • Impacts include a single lane alignment in both directions of I-25 during removal and replacement of the southbound I-25 bridge structure
  • 24/7 closure of the southbound I-25 on and off ramps at Exit 50 during removal and replacement of the southbound I-25 bridge
  • Periods of full closure of both directions of CO 10 under I-25, with detour routes in place during safety critical work
  • Weekday lane closures in both directions of CO 10, managed by flaggers
  • Lane closures in both directions of I-25 and on CO 10 below the bridges during various phases of work
  • This state and federally funded infrastructure upgrade project is designed to improve the safety of two aging bridges to support increased traffic on the I-25 corridor
  • Work includes rehabilitating the northbound I-25 bridge deck, building median crossover pavement to shift traffic, and removing and replacing the southbound I-25 bridge structure
  • The new bridge will be built to meet today's standards
  • Other planned work includes widening and improving the on and off ramps, relocating a sanitary sewer line, and adding guardrail, signs, and safety features.
