I-25 Walsenburg Bridge Replacement

About the Project:

State and federally funded infrastructure upgrade project designed to improve the safety of two bridges to support increased traffic on the I-25 corridor.

Built in the 1960s, the structures cross over Colorado Highway 10 and the BNSF Railroad. Due to its age, heavy usage and seasonal weather, the southbound bridge has reached the end of its lifespan and will be removed and replaced. To achieve this, the northbound bridge’s deck will be rehabilitated, and median crossovers built to route traffic.

Other planned work includes widening and improving the on and off ramps, relocating a sanitary sewer line, and adding guardrail, signs, and safety features.

Project Benefits:

  • New southbound bridge will be built with new technology and materials to meet current standards
  • The northbound bridge will be rehabilitated to support increased traffic on the I-25 corridor
  • Ramps will be widened and improved with additional safety features

Work Schedule:

  • Work will last for 360 working days or approximately 18 months
  • Working hours are 30 minutes after sunrise to 30 minutes before sunset, Monday to Friday
  • Some overnight and weekend work is expected

Traffic Impacts:

Motorists can expect the following impacts during the period of construction:

  • Lane closures in both directions of I-25 and on CO 10 below the bridges during various phases of work
  • Traffic shifts on mainline I-25 at Exit 50 once median crossovers are built
  • Reduced speeds through the work zone
  • Narrowed lanes and reduced shoulders
  • Detour routes will be in place during certain work activities with approximately seven minutes and 10 miles added to travel times
  • Width restriction of 12 feet will be in place 24/7
  • Signs will be posted to alert motorists to the closures and available detour routes
  • Delays on I-25 can also be expected due to other resurfacing project at Exit 59 (Butte Creek)
  • Refer to COtrip.org for real-time travel conditions and road closures
