Weekly Traffic Impacts - March 31 to April 6


Please be advised of the following travel advisory, traffic impacts, restrictions and planned work for next week for the I-25 Walsenburg Bridge Replacement project in Huerfano County.

Travel Advisory - April 4 to April 12 - Full Closure CO 10

 
Starting on Thursday, April 4 and lasting for up to nine days, the Colorado Department of Transportation will close both directions of Colorado Highway 10 under Interstate 25, with detour routes in place. The closure is necessary during equipment mobilization, placement of bridge girders, and other safety critical work activities for the new southbound I-25 bridge structure at Exit 50 in Walsenburg. The following impacts will be in place:
  • CO 10 under I-25 will be continuously closed in both directions for up to nine days, with detour routes in place
  • The closure will begin at 5 a.m. on Thursday, April 4 and last until approx. 8 p.m. on Friday, April 12
  • The closure is necessary to maintain safety for the traveling public, the surrounding community and the construction crews as equipment is mobilized, bridge girders are lifted by crane and placed on the new bridge structure, and other safety critical work is performed
  • Please refer to the map below for recommended detour routes
  • Detour routes will add approx. five miles and 10 minutes to drive times
  • The project limits on CO 10 are at the junction of CO 10/US 160 and extend from Mile Point 0 to MP .25
  • Construction schedules are weather dependent and subject to change
Work includes mobilizing equipment, setting bridge girders, and performing other safety critical activities.
Recommended detour routes during full closure of CO 10 under I-25, Exit 50.

Weekday Traffic Impacts


Monday, April 1 to Saturday, April 6 - both directions of CO 10 under I-25 - weekday lane closures, managed by flaggers & full closure April 4-12
  • A single lane closure will exist on CO 10 from Monday, April 1 to Wednesday, April 3 during working hours, with alternating directions of traffic routed into the open lane by flaggers
  • Motorists can expect brief traffic holds of up to 10 minutes
  • Working hours are half an hour after sunrise to half an hour before sunset, Monday to Friday
  • Some Saturday work is expected
  • CDOT will close both directions of the highway from approx. 5 a.m. on Thursday, April 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday, April 12 during equipment mobilization, bridge girder placement, and other safety critical work activities
  • The highway will be closed continuously during this period
  • Please refer to the Travel Advisory above for details
  • During full closures, detour routes will be posted with up to 5 miles and 10 minutes in additional travel time expected
  • Closures are necessary to maintain safety for the railroads, the construction crews, the surrounding community, and the traveling public
  • The project/closure limits extend from Mile Point 0 to MP .25
  • Construction schedules are weather dependent and subject to change
Work includes removing guardrail and placing material and crane pads on CO 10. Other work includes pouring pier caps and columns.

Ongoing Traffic Impacts
 

Sunday, March 31 to Saturday, April 6 - 24/7 single lane alignment - both directions of I-25 
  • Both directions of traffic on I-25 are reduced to a single lane within the project limits
  • The lanes have been shifted to the northbound side of I-25 via median crossover detour pavement
  • The project limits extend from MP 51 to MP 49 on I-25 at the approaches to and at Exit 50 in Huerfano County
  • This single lane alignment will remain in place until further notice
  • A width restriction of 12 feet is in place
  • Speeds are reduced to 55 mph
  • The northbound I-25 on and off ramps are open
  • The southbound I-25 on and off ramps are closed (see detail below)
  • Caution is advised
Sunday, March 31 to Saturday, April 6 - 24/7 closure - southbound I-25 on and off ramps
  • The southbound I-25 on and off ramps at Exit 50 are closed, with detour routes in place
  • These ramp closures will remain in place 24/7 for about six months while crews remove and replace the southbound I-25 bridge structure
  • Detour signs will be present alerting motorists to alternate routes
Suggested detour routes during the full closure of the southbound I-25 ramps at Exit 50.

Temporary Playground Closure 


Please be advised that the playground located at S. Grant Ave. and Colorado Ave. is closed while crews replace an underground sanitary sewer line. 
  • The playground will remain closed until further notice
  • The closure is in place to maintain public safety during underground utility work
  • Fencing and signs are present alerting the public to the closure

General Impacts, Schedule & Scope of Work

  • Work began in March 2023 with expected completion by late 2024
  • Impacts include a single lane alignment in both directions of I-25 during removal and replacement of the southbound I-25 bridge structure
  • 24/7 closure of the southbound I-25 on and off ramps at Exit 50 during removal and replacement of the southbound I-25 bridge
  • Periods of full closure of both directions of CO 10 under I-25, with detour routes in place during safety critical work
  • Weekday lane closures in both directions of CO 10, managed by flaggers
  • Lane closures in both directions of I-25 and on CO 10 below the bridges during various phases of work
  • This state and federally funded infrastructure upgrade project is designed to improve the safety of two aging bridges to support increased traffic on the I-25 corridor
  • Work includes rehabilitating the northbound I-25 bridge deck, building median crossover pavement to shift traffic, and removing and replacing the southbound I-25 bridge structure
  • The new bridge will be built to meet today's standards
  • Other planned work includes widening and improving the on and off ramps, relocating a sanitary sewer line, and adding guardrail, signs, and safety features.
