I-70 Floyd Hill Project Update

Week of Jan. 21

Heads Up! X Games Aspen 2024 is next weekend from Friday, Jan. 26 through Sunday, Jan. 28. Expect higher traffic volumes along the I-70 Floyd Hill corridor. For tips on traveling to the X Games, check out the event website here

As a reminder, expect narrower lanes and shoulders through the I-70 Floyd Hill Project work zone. Please follow the posted speed limit and do not drive distracted. Slow down and leave extra space between you and the car in front of you. Be aware of current road conditions and adjust your driving accordingly. Please get to your destination safely!

Rock Blasting Traffic Hold: The next I-70 rock blast/traffic hold is expected in early February.

I-70 Lane Closures

  • 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday, Jan. 22, and Tuesday, Jan. 23 — Expect a daytime, single left lane closure on westbound I-70 between Hidden Valley (Exit 243) and Idaho Springs (Exit 241) for striping in the I-70 Mountain Express Lane.
  • 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 23 — Expect a daytime, single right lane closure on westbound I-70 between County Road 65 (Exit 248) and Homestead Road (Exit 247) for roadway patching.

Clear Creek Greenway Trail Closure

The Clear Creek Greenway trail remains closed between the US 6 (Exit 244) and Hidden Valley (Exit 243) interchanges for construction and utility work in this area. This work is scheduled to last until spring 2024, but trail users can expect ongoing trail impacts and closures through 2026. This one-mile portion of the trail will be an active construction zone and will be unsafe for multi-use travel. Other segments of the trail will remain open.

There is currently no alternative route for this trail closure. The Project is actively working on solutions for alternative trail access through 2026. Please plan ahead and continue to check this webpage prior to Clear Creek Greenway Trail use. For up-to-date information visit bit.ly/ccgreenway.

The Clear Creek Greenway Trail is closed from US 6 (exit 244) to Hidden Valley/Central City (exit 243).
Caption: The Clear Creek Greenway Trail is closed from US 6 (Exit 244) to Hidden Valley/Central City (Exit 243). There is an alternate parking location and access to open trail at Game Check Station Trailhead and Park.

Early Project Update - Genesee Wildlife Crossing

Westbound I-70 between Genesee (Exit 254) and Mile Point 255 - Expect a daytime single, left lane closure from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday, Jan. 22, through Thursday, Jan. 25, as crews complete bridge work.

I-70 Floyd Hill Deconstructed: Behind-the-Scenes Construction Videos

The I-70 Floyd Hill Project recently launched a new video series called I-70 Floyd Hill Deconstructed, which provides an inside look at the various construction activities required to build a project of this magnitude. Click on the links below to watch each video:

I-70 Mountain Corridor-Wide Traffic Impacts

  • Reduced speed limits as low as 45 MPH, narrower lanes and shoulders, and increased truck traffic entering and exiting the work zones. Heed the speed limit, do not follow trucks into the work zone, go slow for the cone zone and do not drive distracted.
  • All construction activities are weather-dependent and subject to change. For real-time travel information, visit COTrip.org.

About the Project

The I-70 Floyd Hill Project will improve eight miles of the I-70 mountain corridor, from west of Evergreen to eastern Idaho Springs. The Project will deliver a third westbound I-70 travel lane, which will function as an Express Lane, to improve the current two-lane bottleneck. Other major elements include constructing a missing two-mile section of the frontage road between Evergreen and Idaho Springs, building an eastbound I-70 extended on-ramp for slow-moving vehicles, improving traffic flow and access at interchanges and intersections within the project limits, improving sight distance on roadway curves, improving the Clear Creek Greenway trail, and implementing environmental mitigation to create safer wildlife movements and improve air and water quality, stream conditions and recreation.

Construction began in July 2023 and is expected to conclude in late 2028.
