CO 66 and Weld County Road 21 Intersection Improvements Newsletter

March 13, 2024

CO 66 to close between Weld County Road 19 and WCR 21 for three days

Colorado Highway 66 between Weld County Road 19 and WCR 21 will close for up to three days starting at 7 a.m. on March 19 to replace culverts and irrigation systems before highway resurfacing later this spring.

The signed detour route will direct drivers north to bypass the closed work area using WCR 19, WCR 34 and WCR 21. Access to adjacent properties within the closure will be provided.

Before and after the full closure, flaggers will continue to periodically alternate traffic in a single lane from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m, Monday through Friday. Drivers should plan on travel delays of up to ten minutes. An oversized vehicle width restriction of ten feet is in place.

The construction schedule is weather-dependent and subject to change.

Other Traffic Impacts

CDOT is coordinating traffic control with at least two other projects on the CO 66 corridor between Mead and Platteville this construction season. A critical culvert replacement project is starting up soon less than a mile east of the CO 66 / WCR 21 intersection project. Overnight (9 p.m. to 5 a.m.) closures of CO 66 are expected for three consecutive nights between Weld County Road 21 and WCR 30½ to replace two culverts. More information on overnight CO 66 closure dates will follow.

Drivers are encouraged to take alternate routes, use extra caution in the work zones, and follow all signs and markings.

About the Project

The Colorado Department of Transportation is making safety improvements at the intersection of Colorado Highway 66 and Weld County Road 21. This project will improve safety by adding left turn lanes to all intersection approaches. The intersection will be resurfaced with asphalt pavement to provide a smoother riding surface and increase the longevity of the highway. Work includes reconstructing drainage and irrigation systems. WCR 21 stop signs will be upgraded to flashing light displays for improved visibility.

Martin Marietta Materials is the prime contractor. Project completion is anticipated in late summer 2024.
