Weekly Traffic Impacts - Jan. 28 to Feb. 3
Please be advised of the following travel advisory, general traffic impacts, restrictions and planned work for next week for the I-70 over Ward Road Bridge Replacement project in Jefferson County.
Travel Advisory - Sunday, Jan. 28 - overnight closure Ward Road/CO 72 under I-70 - safety critical girder placement
- Ward Rd/CO 72 under I-70 will be fully closed during overnight hours while crews perform safety critical girder placement on the new westbound I-70 bridge structure
- The closure will begin at 8 p.m. and last until 6 a.m.
- A backup date of Monday, Jan. 29 will be implemented in the event of inclement weather
- Double lane closures will be taken in both directions of Ward Road under I-70 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. prior to the full closure for crane and equipment setup
- The project limits on Ward Road are MP 0 (44th Ave) to MP .25 (just east of the I-70 interchange)
- No impacts to I-70 within the project limits will exist during this work
- The westbound I-70 Ward Road on and off ramps will also remain open, but no access will be permitted to/from W. 44th Ave
- The project limits on I-70 are confined to Mile Point 266.5 (Exit 266 Ward Road) to MP 265 (Exit 265 CO 58/Golden)
- Detour signage will route motorists to access westbound I-70 at Clear Creek Drive via Youngfield, or to Kipling St. via the Frontage Road
- The detours will add approximately 2 miles and 5 minutes to travel times
- Uniformed traffic control personnel, flaggers, signs and construction devices will be present during the full closure to maintain safety
- A traffic shift is in place on westbound I-70
- Lanes are narrowed and caution is advised
Work includes placing girders on the new bridge structure.

General Traffic Impacts
Sunday, Jan. 28 to Thursday, Jan. Feb. 1 - I-70 at Ward Road - no planned overnight lane or ramp closures
- No overnight lane or ramp closures are planned on I-70 within the project limits
- The project limits are confined to Mile Point 266.5 (Exit 266 Ward Road) to MP 265 (Exit 265 CO 58/Golden)
- A traffic shift is in place on westbound I-70
- Lanes are narrowed and caution is advised
Sunday, Jan. 28 to Friday, Feb. 2 - both directions of Ward Rd/CO 72 under I-70 - full closure on 1/28 (overnight) and daytime lane closures Tuesday to Friday
- Double lane closures will be taken in both directions of Ward Road under I-70 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 28 prior to full closure
- Ward Road/CO 72 under I-70 will be fully closed from 8 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 28 to 6 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 29 during safety critical bridge girder placement work (see Travel Advisory above)
- Single lane closures switching to double lane closures will exist in both directions of Ward Road under I-70 during daytime hours Tuesday to Friday
- The weekday closures will be taken from approx. 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
- The closure limits are confined to MP 0 (44th Ave) to MP .25 (just east of the I-70 interchange)
- Sidewalk access is limited and caution is advised
- Signs and construction devices are present alerting motorists and pedestrians to the work
Work includes placing bridge girders, setting deck panels, and installing bridge overhang and deck edge.

General Travel Impacts & Scope of Work
- The project began in February 2023 with an anticipated completion date of late 2024
- Impacts include overnight lane and ramp closures on I-70 at Ward Road (Exit 266) during certain work activities, and daytime weekday lane closures and occasional full closures of both directions of Ward Road (CO 72) under I-70 from W. 44th Ave to the westbound I-70 interchange
- During full closures of Ward Road or the westbound I-70 on-ramp, motorists will be detoured to Youngfield Ave to access Exit 264 (Clear Creek Drive/32nd Ave) or the Frontage Road to access I-70 via Kipling St
- Ward Road under I-70 will be fully closed during safety critical work
- This state funded project is part of CDOT’s 10-Year Plan to replace two aging bridges on I-70 over Ward Road with a single structure
- This new structure is being built to meet today's standards to support increased traffic on the I-70 corridor

Harlan St Bridge Replacement & Interchange Improvement project
- Impacts include full periodic closures of the Harlan St. interchange, the Exit 270 on and off ramps to westbound I-70 and other lane and road closures within the project's limits
- Motorists will be detoured to Wadsworth Blvd to bypass ramp closures
- This project has an estimated completion date of February 2025
