I-70 Bridges over Ward Road

About the Project:

This project consists of replacing two aging bridge structures on Interstate 70 over Ward Road (Colorado Highway 72) in the City of Wheat Ridge.

The work includes the removal of existing
bridges, and replacement with a single structure. Improvements also include reconstruction of mainline pavement approaches to new bridge structure, new shoulders to match expanded bridge width, 1100 feet of mill and overlay on Ward Road. Work will include reset/replacement of existing overhead sign structures within the project limits, relocation of existing CCTV pole and relocation of fiber optic conduits across new bridge structure.


Work Schedule:

  • Work is expected to begin in late February 2023 and last until November 2024.
  • Working hours are 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday to Friday with safety critical work performed overnight.

Traffic Impacts:

  • Traffic shifts, narrowed lanes and reduced speeds will exist at the approaches to and at Exit 266 (Ward Rd/CO 72) along both directions of I-70 from Exit 267 (Kipling) to Exit 265 (CO 58/Golden)
  • Three lanes of traffic will be maintained during daytime hours
  • Overnight (non peak-travel hours) single or double lane closures in both directions of I-70 from Exit 267 to Exit 265 will exist until completion.
  • Lane and some full closures of Ward Road under the I-70 bridges will exist during the period of construction.
  • Detour routes will exist to manage traffic.
  • Variable message boards, signs, construction devices will be in place throughout the project's limits
  • Uniformed traffic control personnel and flagger operations will be present during safety critical work
  • All schedules are weather dependent and subject to change
