Express Lanes maximize the efficiency of HOV lanes by moving more people not more cars. Express Lanes allow those who drive alone (also known as "single occupant vehicles") to use the Express Lanes if they pay a toll or to travel as a carpooler for free, using a switchable transponder.

Hybrid Vehicle Use in the HOT/HOV Lanes
In May 2008 the Colorado Department of Transportation's (CDOT) hybrid vehicle program began and allowed owners of qualified Hybrid Vehicles to apply for a permit to use High Occupancy Vehicle (“HOV”) lanes and High Occupancy Toll (“HOT”) lanes with a single occupant. Qualified and approved vehicles must display the required HOV exemption permit and transponder. ***HOV Exemption still in effect for vehicles that have been approved by CDOT.***
