News Release

October 27, 2021 - Northwestern Colorado - Design finalized with construction planned for 2022

MESA COUNTY - The Colorado Department of Transportation invites Grand Junction community members to view transportation improvements in the final design for the US 6 North Avenue Improvements Project. Residents, stakeholders, motorists, and others are invited to view project information on the project website. The website can be viewed by clicking here, with more information available below.

The project area includes US 6 (North Ave) from 1st Street to I-70B in Grand Junction. Transportation improvements include resurfacing the road with two inches of asphalt and installing new medians to control access, improve safety and improve traffic flow. Construction is scheduled to begin in spring 2022 and is anticipated to be completed in fall 2022. Further information on construction timing and phasing will be announced once a contractor is on board.

Due to current limitations on public events during the novel coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19), CDOT is providing virtual opportunities for public engagement on the final design for the US 6 North Avenue Improvements Project. Information about this project is shared and updated on the project website (click here to view). Virtual public engagement includes, but is not exclusive to, the following process:

  • Press release announcement for local media

  • Emails to project stakeholders

  • Public notification on CDOT’s Facebook and Twitter pages

All methods will alert the public and stakeholders to the opportunity to review the project details. To send comments or questions about this project, please email cdot_us6northaveimprovements@state.co.us or use the comment form on the project website. Comments during this virtual public engagement period will be received until November 19. CDOT will document, record and review comments. CDOT encourages public input on all projects.

If members of the public do not have access to the internet or need the information in Spanish, please call 970-683-6361. Comments can also be submitted by calling 970-683-6361, though email is preferred. More information about the project is online at https://www.codot.gov/projects/us6-north-avenue-improvements.

The Regional Transportation Planning Office (RTPO) and City of Grand Junction (City) also have a project on North Ave to develop a corridor plan that will lay out the vision and improvements needed to make North Ave more cyclist, pedestrian, and transit friendly. The project will add to the improvements completed by CDOT’s US 6 North Ave project. Public engagement for the RTPO and City project is anticipated to start in November 2021. At that time, information will be posted on the Grand Valley Transit website: gvt.mesacounty.us.
