CDOT plans to close Berthoud Pass overnight Saturday for winter maintenance operations due to dangerous weather conditions

Winter Travel Alert

February 3, 2024 - Denver/Central Colorado - Safety closure allows crews to clear road safely and prevent emergency situations

Update - 5 a.m. (2/4) - Berthoud Pass opened shortly after 5 a.m. in time for morning traffic after crews worked overnight on winter maintenance operations for everyone’s safety! Motorists must be equipped for winter driving, leave ample following distance, and drive carefully. Skiers, snowshoers and snowmobilers should park only in clearly marked and designated parking areas.

Clear Creek and Grand counties - The Colorado Department of Transportation plans to close US 40 Berthoud Pass (mile 236 to 249), covering Berthoud Falls to Winter Park, from 11 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 3 to 5:30 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 4 when traffic volume is the lowest. It is possible that the closure could occur earlier than 11 p.m. on Saturday depending on the severity of the weather conditions. Due to anticipated heavy snow totals over 15 inches and low visibility, a safety closure will be necessary overnight so that crews can safely conduct winter maintenance operations. By taking proactive measures to safely close Berthoud Pass, this will prevent incidents and extended safety closures during the overnight hours.

CDOT expects to reopen Berthoud Pass early Sunday ahead of the ski traffic.

Motorists are urged to be prepared for severe winter storm conditions including heavy snow and low visibility, which makes for dangerous driving conditions.
