Work to rehab four I-225 bridges starts Sunday night

Travel Advisory

Aug. 8, 2025 - Denver Metro/Central Colorado - Overnight lane closures needed for work on bridges at 2nd, 6th avenues

Aurora — The Colorado Department of Transportation and its contractor Structures Inc. will begin work Sunday night, Aug. 10, to improve the driving surface of the northbound and southbound Interstate 225 bridges over 2nd and 6th avenues. These bridges have an elevated slope in the middle, and this project will help flatten the driving surface by putting down asphalt between the middle of the bridge and the approaches to each bridge.

Along with leveling out the lanes, this project includes replacing the bridge expansion joints with plug joints, replacing several concrete panels in both directions of I-225 just north of 6th Avenue, installing a waterproof overlay and doing a strategic mill and overlay. The overlay involves putting down gradually decreasing depths of asphalt from the middle of the bridge to the bridge approaches to even out the roadway surface.

This work will require single and double lane closures in both directions of I-225 from just north of 6th Avenue (Mile Point 9.5) to just south of Alameda Avenue (Mile Point 7.5) during the overnight hours Sunday through Thursday nights over the next three months.

Traffic impacts - overnight I-225 lane closures coming up:

Work will be done in only one direction at a time on I-225 from north of 6th Avenue to south of Alameda Avenue, with single lane closures beginning at 7 p.m. each night and double lane closures at 10 p.m. All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m. the following day. The lane closure schedule for the week of Aug. 10 is:

  • Sunday, Aug. 10 and Monday, Aug. 11 – Northbound I-225
  • Tuesday, Aug. 12 and Wednesday Aug. 13 – Southbound I-225
  • Thursday, Aug. 14 – Northbound I-225

What motorists need to know:

  • Travel lanes will narrow to a single lane 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. in one direction of I-225
  • Motorists are urged to drive with extra caution through the work zone, heed the signs, watch for crew members and equipment, do not speed and give plenty of following distance
  • Construction schedules can change depending on weather and other factors. To keep apprised of travel impacts, visit COtrip.org or call the project hotline at 720-634-5333

The project is expected to take about three months to complete, and later this fall there will be a full closure of northbound I-225 between Alameda and 6th avenues for five consecutive nights.
