About the Project

CDOT is in the study phase of a project to replace the aging bridges at Speer Boulevard and 23rd Avenue over I-25 in Denver. Beyond this core focus of the project, CDOT has been evaluating additional improvements to the interchange system to benefit all travelers and the surrounding community.

During the public meeting, CDOT will present the recommended combined Proposed Action for improvements: the 23rd Avenue Braid and the Speer Boulevard Diverging Diamond Interchange. This Proposed Action will be evaluated during the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) process and will be compared to the No Action which is doing nothing. Public involvement continues through the NEPA process.

The 23rd Avenue Braid alternative balances the needs to improve safety for all users and maintains access to businesses, community resources and neighborhoods. The braided ramp design would:

  • Improve safety by increasing distance to merge on and off I-25 and improve northbound ramp connections
  • Maintain I-25 access for nearby homes, community resources and business and preserve existing connections within the community
  • Add sidewalks and bike lanes, add a new signal at the northbound I-25 ramps for safer crossings and enhance safety for everyone using 23rd Avenue - whether walking, biking or driving

This alternative was shaped by input from a variety of people who rely on 23rd Avenue every day. This includes residents, businesses, people walking and biking and emergency services.

The Speer Boulevard Diverging Diamond Interchange alternative would ease traffic flow and support safety of everyone, especially people walking and biking. It includes protected crossings and removing left hand turns.
