CDOT begins railroad crossing merger along US 6 on MCR U & MCR 31
Travel Advisory
Morgan County - The Colorado Department of Transportation will begin work on a merging of Morgan County Road 31 into MCR U alongside US Highway 6 this week.
This project will improve the Burlington Northern railroad crossings and create a better flow of traffic for motorists. Work will consist of embankment, aggregate base course, hot mix asphalt paving, reclamation, striping and new signage to complete the crossing.
“This project will be incredibly impactful for the residents in the area. We’ll be coordinating with the BNSF railroad to eliminate two current railroad crossings and merge them into one,” said Northeast Colorado Regional Transportation Director Heather Paddock. “Not only will this streamline traffic, but it will also allow an easier driving experience for our motorists.”
Creating a new railroad crossing and merging county roads has many benefits including safety and an improved driving experience for motorists. AB Underground, of LaSalle, is the contractor for this project. This project is expected to be completed by the end of July 2025.

Travel impacts
- Work hours will occur from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. or 7 p.m. when needed, Monday through Friday.
- US 6 will have periodic southbound closures, as well as MCR 31 and MCR U will have periodic one lane closures.
- The speed limit may be reduced to 50 mph through the work zone.
- The project is expected to be completed by the end of July.
