Chip seal project to begin on CO 133 between Carbondale and McClure Pass

Travel Advisory

May 29, 2025 - Northwestern Colorado - Motorists should plan for 20-minute delays

Pitkin and Gunnison Counties — The Colorado Department of Transportation and contracting partner United Companies will begin a chip seal on CO Highway 133 from Roaring Fork High School in Carbondale to McClure Pass on June 3.

Motorists should plan for 20-minute delays during construction hours. The project has an anticipated completion date of mid-August 2025.

The project will improve approximately 24 miles of CO 133 from Mile Point 67, Roaring Fork High School, to MP 42, McClure Pass. Work will include asphalt patching, chip seal applications, fog seal and pavement markings.

Crews will also remove the old epoxy striping and replace it with a temporary paint during construction. The chip seal does not adhere to the epoxy paint on the road surface. To prevent future separation of the chip seal, the old epoxy is removed and temporary striping is placed.

The chip seal application will help protect and extend the life of the underlying pavement. The new surface will provide skid resistance and reduce overall cracking.

This project is in conjunction with a culvert improvement project that took place earlier this spring on US 6 between Rifle and Silt. Work consisted of one culvert replacement and one culvert improvement that was completed in April 2025.
