Pavement rehabilitation project will begin on Boulder Canyon Drive (CO 119) next week
Travel Advisory
Boulder — The Colorado Department of Transportation and prime contractor, Brannan Sand and Gravel, will begin a pavement rehabilitation project on Colorado Highway 119 (Boulder Canyon Drive) and Colorado Highway 7 (Canyon Boulevard) through downtown Boulder.
The $4.6 million dollar project is expected to start the week of May 4 and continue until mid-August. The work zone will stretch from 28th Street to the entrance of Boulder Canyon.
The first phase of the project will take place during the week of May 4, where crews will perform overnight utility relocations as well as concrete sidewalks, gutters and curb ramp upgrades. This work will span throughout the entirety of the project zone.
Phase two will take place during the following two weeks leading up to Memorial Day weekend. This phase will include overnight resurfacing operations on CO 7 (Canyon Boulevard) between 28th Street and Broadway (Mile Point 49.5 to MP 50.6).
The final phase is expected to begin after Memorial Day weekend and will focus on CO 119 (Boulder Canyon Road) from Broadway west to the entrance of Boulder Canyon (MP 40.7 to 41.9). Phase three will require a total roadway reconstruction, including the full depth removal of existing asphalt, subgrade reconditioning and the installation of new asphalt. Additional work will include new pavement markings and guardrail installations in several areas throughout the project corridor.
The project will provide critical upgrades for motorists, prolonging the life of the roadway surface for years to come. The asphalt rehabilitation will boast safer and smoother travel paths for drivers and concrete repairs will offer more accessible routes for multimodal users.

Travel impacts
- For the month of May, work will take place overnight. General nighttime work will be from 6:30 p.m. to 6 a.m., Sunday night through Friday morning. Work hours will be adjusted to 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., May 7 through 11, to mitigate temporary construction impacts during the University of Colorado’s graduation week.
- From the end of May through August, crews will be primarily working during the day from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Saturday. Some intermittent night work may take place throughout phase three.
- During phase one, drivers can expect nighttime single alternating lane closures from the entrance of Boulder Canyon to 28th Street.
- During phase two, drivers can anticipate single and double-lane closures on CO 7 from 28th Street to Broadway. There will be one through-lane of travel open in both directions.
- For phase three, drivers can expect traffic to be reduced to one lane in each direction from Broadway to the entrance of Boulder Canyon. Closures will remain permanently in place for several weeks at a time.
- On the far west end of the project zone, there will be a brief period where the two-lane road is reduced to a single lane. During this time, there will be a temporary traffic signal in place to assist drivers through the closure.
- Depending on the location and phase of construction, some side streets and business driveway access will be restricted. The project team will work to maintain an alternate point of entry at all times. Detour routes for side street closures may be necessary.
- During nighttime sidewalk and curb ramp upgrades, there will be temporary pedestrian closures and detour routes. Please follow all signage on-site when navigating the construction zone on foot.
- Coordination has been established with Mass-Transit for temporary bus stop locations.
- There will be a 10-foot width restriction.
- The project team has coordinated work schedules with the City of Boulder to accommodate the University of Colorado’s graduation and the Boulder Boulder to minimize disruptions during the City’s high-volume events.
