May 28, 2025 - Northwestern Colorado - Project adds monument signs and play and photo areas

Mesa County — The Colorado Department of Transportation will close the Fruita Welcome Center and restrooms located on Colorado Highway 340 for renovations beginning in June 2025.

The project, at Exit 19 off of Interstate 70, will consist of renovating the welcome center and rest area inside and out, along with adding two monument signs, a children's play area, and areas designed for photo opportunities.

The project is expected to be completed in February 2026.

The Western Slope Vietnam Memorial, several parking spots in the southwest portion of the lot, and the travel trailer/recreation vehicle grey and black water dump station will remain open and available to the public.

The welcome center and restrooms will be closed for the duration of the project.

  • Do not speed in work zones. Obey the posted speed limits.
  • Stay Alert! Expect the unexpected.
  • Watch for workers. Drive with caution.
  • Don't change lanes unnecessarily.
  • Avoid using mobile devices such as phones while driving in work zones.
  • Turn on headlights so that workers and other drivers can see you.
  • Be especially alert at night while driving in work zones.
  • Expect delays, especially during peak travel times.
  • Allow ample space between you and the car in front of you.
  • Anticipate lane shifts and merge when directed to do so.
  • Be patient!
