I-70 Variable Speed Limit Signs in Dowd Canyon Project is complete
Travel Advisory
Eagle County — The Colorado Department of Transportation, in partnership with Lumin8 Transportation Technologies, has successfully completed the installation of 18 new variable speed limit signs along Interstate 70 in Dowd Canyon, between Mile Points 169 and 173. The newly installed signs are LED electronic versions of traditional speed limit signs. Unlike static signs, they display regulatory and enforceable speed limits in real time, based on current highway conditions.
“This milestone represents a significant advancement in enhancing driver safety and improving traffic flow along one of Colorado’s most heavily traveled mountain corridors,” said Jason Smith, CDOT Regional Transportation Director.
In addition to variable speed limit signs, roadway weather information systems were installed to collect real-time data on factors such as road friction, temperature and visibility. This data supports both speed limit adjustments and more informed decision-making for drivers. Finally, guardrails along this stretch of I-70 were replaced to enhance roadside safety, help prevent vehicles from leaving the roadway and reduce the severity of potential crashes.
