Resurfacing project to begin on CO 63 north and south of Akron

Washington County — The Colorado Department of Transportation and prime contractor, Simon, will begin a resurfacing project on June 2 along Colorado Highway 63, north and south of the Town of Akron. Approximately nine miles of CO 63 will be improved, between Mile Points 25 and 34. The project is expected to be completed by late October.

This $7.9 million dollar project will include milling, pavement overlay, striping and signage installation. In some areas, shoulders will be graded to create a more gradual slope from the pavement, erosion control measures will be installed and guardrail will be replaced.

“Well-maintained rural highways support the local economy, from farm to town. This project is about keeping those crucial links strong and efficient and investing in the safety of CDOT’s infrastructure to protect travelers,” said CDOT Regional Transportation Director Heather Paddock.

Resurfacing will create a smoother ride and prolong the life of the road surface. Shoulder work will provide improve erosion control and added safety with guardrail replacements.

Travel Impacts

  • Work will occur during daylight hours, Monday to Friday, with a potential for some Saturday work
  • Vehicular travel will be reduced to a single-lane, alternating traffic intermittently in either direction, throughout the duration of the project during daylight hours. The roadway will return to normal operation each evening
  • Lane closures, guided by flaggers and pilot cars, will have up to 15-minute delays
  • Work will occur in segments, with approximately one to one-and-a-half-mile sections of the roadway closed at a time
  • The speed limit will be reduced to 40 MPH from the posted 65 MPH speed outside of town
  • The project is expected to last until the end of October

    • Don't change lanes unnecessarily.

    • Turn on headlights so that workers and other drivers can see you.
    • Be especially alert at night while driving in work zones.
    • Expect delays, especially during peak travel times.
    • Allow ample space between you and the car in front of you.
    • Anticipate lane shifts and merge when directed to do so.
