Resurfacing project to begin on US 40 in Winter Park

May 9, 2025 - Northwestern Colorado - Motorists should plan for single lane closures

Grand County — The Colorado Department of Transportation, in partnership with United Companies, will begin a resurfacing project on May 12 along US Highway 40 in Winter Park. Motorists should plan for single-lane closures during construction hours. The project has an anticipated completion date in October 2025.

The project will improve approximately three miles of US 40 from Mile Point 229.6, Vasquez Road, to MP 234, Winter Park Drive. Work will include milling old asphalt, paving with new asphalt, guardrail replacement and installing Americans with Disabilities Act ramps on US 40 at Blaze Resorts, Village Drive, Old Town Drive and Winter Park Drive. Additional work will consist of bridge joint repairs on US 40 at MP 223.7, in the community of Tabernash.

The new asphalt will add years of life to the highway, provide a smoother road surface and will add durability by increasing the resistance of ruts and road damage. The new guardrail will be 31 inches high, designed to meet new safety standard requirements. The higher railing will help veering vehicles remain on the road more effectively, making the highway safer for the traveling public.

"These improvements have been identified not only by our CDOT crews, but by the Winter Park community as priority needs. We are pleased to make these improvements to help with the quality of the roadway and quality of life for commuters, bicyclists, and pedestrians," said Jason Smith, CDOT's Northwest Regional Transportation Director. "Projects like this help to show CDOT's commitment to working with our community partners."

Other benefits of the project include the installation of five ADA compliant curb ramps at three locations. The new ramps will be constructed in compliance with the Public Right of Way Accessibility Guidelines requirements and will provide functional accessibility for our multi-modal users.
