May 9, 2025 - Southwestern Colorado - Work includes resurfacing and widening

Grand County — The Colorado Department of Transportation is scheduled to begin a safety improvement project on May 12 along US Highway 40 between Granby and Tabernash. Improvements will take place on a two-mile stretch of highway between the Cottonwood Pass Road and County Road 53, Mile Points 217 to 219. The project is expected to be completed by late October.

Work includes asphalt resurfacing for both eastbound and westbound US 40, shoulder widening, barrier and guardrail installation, new signage, striping, grading, and drainage improvements. United Companies, of Grand Junction, is the contractor for this project.

“This project, along with others slated along this roadway, is designed to improve safety for local commuters and visitors to the area,” said Jason Smith, CDOT Regional Transportation Director. “Not only has north central Colorado experienced increased traffic volumes in recent years with more people moving to Grand County and tourists visiting area attractions like Grand Lake, Winter Park, and Rocky Mountain National Park, but the weather has also taken a toll on these roads. The timing is right for this project as the new asphalt surface and widening will make the roadway safer for these users.”

Resurfacing provides a smoother road surface, fills in chips and potholes and extends the lifespan of the roadway. Construction of wider shoulders improves safety by providing a larger recoverable area on the side of the road. These improvements will allow for a smoother and safer drive for motorists.
