CDOT publishes I-270 Improvements Project Draft Environmental Impact Statement, launching a 60-day public comment period
News Release
Denver - The Colorado Department of Transportation, in coordination with the Federal Highway Administration, today announced the publication of the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) for the I-270 Corridor Improvements Project in the Federal Register. Publication marks the beginning of a 60-day public comment period, during which the public is invited to review the document and provide feedback.
The DEIS evaluates alternatives to improve safety, mobility and infrastructure conditions along the six-mile segment of I-270 between I-25 and I-70. It examines potential environmental, transportation, and community impacts and identifies a preferred alternative. Additionally, CDOT has published State Reports to ensure compliance with Colorado Revised Statute § 43-1-128 Environmental Improvements of Capacity Projects, and all pertinent accompanying rules and policies. These State Reports are separate from the federal DEIS, and include comprehensive analyses on subjects such as greenhouse gas emissions and disproportionately impacted communities. These reports can be reviewed and commented on at the same time.
The DEIS identifies a preferred alternative consisting of two general-purpose lanes and one new express lane that accommodates transit in each direction. Benefits of this design include improved safety, travel time reliability, improved transit and freight operations and community enhancements. The preferred alternative reflects extensive technical analysis and incorporates public, stakeholder and agency input gathered throughout the multi-year planning process.
“Publishing the DEIS is an important milestone for this corridor and for the communities that rely on it every day,” said CDOT Executive Director Shoshana Lew. “This process reflects years of technical work and community engagement. We encourage the public to review the documents and share their feedback so we can ensure the final plan meets local needs while improving safety, mobility and long-term sustainability.”
I-270 is a critical link in Colorado’s transportation network, supporting regional travel, freight movement and access to employment centers. Much of the corridor’s infrastructure is more than 50 years old and no longer meets current safety, mobility, or operational needs.
Since project initiation, CDOT has conducted significant outreach, including community meetings, corridor tours, listening sessions, online open houses, and engagement with environmental justice communities, local governments, and partner agencies. Feedback from these efforts helped shape the alternatives analyzed in the DEIS.
Public Review and Comment
The DEIS and State Reports are available for public review on CDOT’s I-270 Corridor Improvements website: codot.gov/projects/studies/i270study. CDOT and FHWA have established a 60 day comment period, to ensure sufficient time for public comment.
- Public comment period ends: Jan. 20, 2026
All comments will be reviewed, documented and evaluated as the agencies prepare the Final Environmental Impact Statement and associated decision documents. Comments may be submitted online, by mail, or in person at upcoming public hearings in January.
Public comments help refine project elements, identify issues that may require further analysis, and ensure that transportation, environmental and community needs are appropriately balanced in the final design.
In addition to the documents being available electronically, the public will also be able to review hard copies in person at the following locations:
