November 6, 2025 - Northeastern Colorado - I-25 North Express Lanes Project, Mead to Berthoud hits major milestone with new bridge construction

Weld County —Thanks to the efficient and diligent work of the project crews, the Weld County 38 bridge over Interstate 25 is scheduled to reopen Nov. 7, 2025. This closure was initially set to be in place through December of this year.

In June, the Colorado Department of Transportation closed the WCR 38 bridge over I-25 for the I-25 North Express Lanes Project, Mead to Berthoud, while crews reconstructed the bridge and connected it to the new roadway.

Weld County Road 38 Bridge Improvements:

The aging WCR 38 bridge was built in 1960 and needed safety and traffic capacity improvements, and a larger bridge was needed to span the widened I-25 section. Since closing the bridge in June, crews transformed the WCR 38 bridge over I-25 with the following work:

  • Demolished the previous bridge
  • Completely reconstructed a new bridge
  • Constructed a new 8-foot-wide sidewalk on the bridge for multimodal connections over I-25
  • Connected the new WCR 38 bridge to the roadway

Ultimately, this closure helped invest money into permanent infrastructure in another area of the project and saved Colorado taxpayers money. Completing the reconstruction of this bridge is a major milestone, bringing the project one step closer to the finish line for a safer, more efficient I-25 North corridor.

The I-25 North Express Lanes Project: Mead to Berthoud section is a continuation of the approximately 20 miles of improvements that have been completed on I-25 between Berthoud to Fort Collins over the past six years. This approximately 6-mile project will expand and enhance I-25, from Colorado Highway 66 in Mead and connect to the newly built portion of I-25 just south of CO 56 in Berthoud. Once complete in 2028, this project will complete a major missing puzzle piece on I-25 and will be the first time there will be more than two lanes of I-25 from Denver to Fort Collins in both directions.
