Resurfacing project completed on CO 141 near Gateway
News Release
Mesa County — The Colorado Department of Transportation, in partnership with Elam Construction, completed resurfacing along CO Highway 141 near Gateway. The project improved approximately 13 miles of CO 141 from Mile Point 107, Larsen Canyon south of Gateway, to MP 120, Turner Gulch north of Gateway. This project began on July 7 and completed in October 2025.
“CO 141 is a scenic and historically significant route that winds through the western region of the state,” said Jason Smith, CDOT Regional Transportation Director. “In addition to supporting tourism, the highway serves as a vital link for connecting rural communities. The new surface will make this route more reliable.”
Work included asphalt overlay paving (two applications), guardrail replacement and bridge deck repairs at two locations. Crews placed shouldering material along both sides of the 13-mile stretch of road to make it safer for drivers by providing a smoother, more stable surface to return to the roadway.
“Despite having to shut down operations for a period due to the Turner Gulch and Wright Draw fires along CO 141, the contractor and crews were still able to get this vital rural road project completed,” said Smith. “This is a great example of a good team pushing through diversity to get the project completed.”
The new asphalt will add years of life to the highway, provide a smoother road surface and will add durability by increasing the resistance of ruts and road damage. The new guardrail will be 31 inches high, designed to meet new safety standard requirements. The higher railing will help veering vehicles remain on the road more effectively, making the highway safer for the traveling public.
