Southbound I-25 near 20th Street opens after crews safely remove heavy equipment from lanes
Travel Advisory
Denver - Southbound I-25 near the 20th Street off-ramp is fully open after four of the five lanes were closed to remove a large piece of construction equipment that fell from a flatbed truck and landed on its side. The incident happened 4:30 a.m. today in a coned-off work zone as contract crews were removing the equipment following overnight resurfacing work on I-25.
The equipment is called a shuttle buggy, which is used to transfer hot-mixed asphalt. This is very heavy, boxy equipment weighing about 80,000 pounds, which made it a challenge to move. Crews, tows and other equipment were on scene since early this morning to remove the shuttle buggy and clean some of the hydraulic fluid that leaked from the equipment. By 10:30 a.m. today, the buggy was uprighted and loaded onto the flatbed trailer. Once the equipment was removed, the road surface was cleaned of debris and the work zone was cleared.
The incident occurred as contract crews were beginning to clear the overnight work zone for the I-25 resurfacing project from Alameda to 44th avenues. Per standard protocols, CDOT will conduct an after-action review with the department’s project team, the contractor, and any other parties who were on scene at the time.
