US 160 & CO 172 Elmore's Corner traffic signal replacement scheduled April 23 and 27

La Plata and Archuleta Counties — On Thursday, April 23 the Colorado Department of Transportation will begin a two-day operation to replace a traffic signal pole at the junction of US Highway 160 and Colorado Highway 172 (Elmore's Corner). Motorists traveling between Durango and Bayfield April 23 and 27 can expect daytime delays and congestion while slower speeds, lane reductions and flagging operations are in place between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m.
Crews will pour a concrete foundation in the intersection median on April 23, after the concrete sets, they will return Monday, April 27 to install the new traffic signal pole. Motorists should allow for additional travel time both days.
Additional five to 10-minute delays on US 160 west of Pagosa Springs (Mile Points 126 to 137) can be expected Monday to Thursday between 7:30 a.m. and 7 p.m. through June 2026. Traffic Impacts
On April 23 and 27, motorists will encounter road work at the intersection of US 160 and CO 172. Traffic impacts will include:
- Working hours will be from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
- Various lane closures will take place within the work zone and motorists will be guided by flagging personnel
- Traffic delays up to 10 minutes are anticipated
- Motorists should slow down as they approach the work zones, drive with caution, allow extra space between vehicles and give themselves extra travel time

- Do not speed in work zones. Obey the posted speed limits.
- Stay Alert! Expect the unexpected.
- Watch for workers. Drive with caution.
- Don't change lanes unnecessarily.
- Avoid using mobile devices such as phones while driving in work zones.
- Turn on headlights so that workers and other drivers can see you.
- Be especially alert at night while driving in work zones.
- Expect delays, especially during peak travel times.
- Allow ample space between you and the car in front of you.
- Anticipate lane shifts and merge when directed to do so.
