Colorado Highway 340 resurfacing project to begin in March
Project Announcement
Mesa County — The Colorado Department of Transportation with prime contractor, United Companies, will begin a resurfacing project on Colorado Highway 340 between Redlands Parkway and Grand Avenue (Mile Point 9.61 to MP 13.21) in early March.
In addition to resurfacing efforts, the project will also include bridge deck rehabilitation work on the east and westbound bridges over the Colorado River, concrete curb ramp upgrades at several intersections, guardrail replacements and new pavement marking throughout the corridor. The $6.2 million project is anticipated to be completed by August of this year.
Crews will begin with bridge deck rehabilitation work, starting on the eastbound bridge structure followed by the westbound. Construction on the bridges will take place during daytime hours from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m, Monday through Friday.
In April, work will transition to nighttime hours for resurfacing operations. General hours for night work will take place from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., Sunday night through Thursday night.
“This section of Highway 340 and the bridges have seen a lot of increased traffic over the years,” said Jason Smith, Regional Transportation Director. “These improvements will increase the safety and ride quality for drivers and cyclists traveling this section of the road as well as pedestrians’ safety for many years to come.”
The project’s resurfacing efforts are expected to provide a smoother and safer driving experience for motorists. Studies show that an even roadway surface decreases wear-and-tear on vehicles and allows for better driver control in variable weather conditions. The bridge deck rehabilitation work will provide critical safety upgrades to maintain the strength and efficacy of the bridge structures for years to come. Additional curb ramp improvements will also offer better pedestrian accessibility for those who walk, roll and stroll through the area.
Travel Impacts
- Drivers can expect continual single-lane closures on the east and westbound bridges over the Colorado River in March and April for bridge deck rehabilitation work. Closures are expected to start on the eastbound bridge first, followed by the westbound bridge
- During nighttime paving operations, motorists can anticipate single alternating lane closures in each direction
- One through-lane of travel will remain open at all times in each direction
- Temporary sidewalk and pedestrian crosswalk closures will be in place for concrete curb ramp replacements. Please follow all on-site signage to navigate around active construction areas
- Business and residential access is expected to remain open during daytime hours with intermittent overnight interruptions for paving operations
- Some construction-related noise is expected for residents and businesses near CO 340 during working hours
- While significant delays are not expected, motorists are encouraged to account for up to 10 minutes of extra travel time when driving the corridor
