Crews complete majority of resurfacing project on Federal Boulevard

Travel Advisory

Feb. 24, 2026 - Denver Metro/Central Colorado - Final operations underway with minimal travel impacts

Denver and Adams County — The Colorado Department of Transportation and its prime contractor, Brannan Sand & Gravel, are in the final stages of a resurfacing and infrastructure improvement project on Federal Boulevard (US 287). Over five miles of highway between 92nd Avenue and I-70 received upgrades for motorists and pedestrians.

Construction began in March of 2025 with new concrete sidewalks and 73 pedestrian curb ramp improvements that are Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant. Crews then focused on bridge deck rehabilitation over Clear Creek and traffic signal replacements at 50th, 64th, 67th and 72nd Avenues. Phased asphalt resurfacing operations continued through the summer and were completed in October of 2025.

Since the completion of resurfacing, the project team has activated the new traffic signals, continued utility upgrades and implemented permanent pavement marking. Operations are currently winding down with minimal travel impacts expected after mid-February.

As a result of this project, the newly resurfaced highway is expected to enhance driver safety. A smoother, more even roadway surface reduces the risk of losing vehicle control, particularly in variable weather conditions. It can also help improve visibility for motorists and decrease wear and tear on a vehicle.

“The improvements in the area will allow for more accessible multimodal travel, prolonging the life of critical infrastructure along Federal Boulevard for years to come,” said Jessica Myklebust, CDOT Region 1 Regional Transportation Director. “As the population in Denver and its surrounding area continues to grow, investing in transportation upgrades is crucial to keep drivers moving safely and efficiently.”

While travel impacts related to this project are expected to wind down in February, construction associated with City of Westminster’s Uplands neighborhood development may continue to impact motorists on Federal Boulevard between 83rd and 88th Avenue. Visit the development’s website to stay up to date on the project’s progress and anticipated roadway impacts.
