CDOT celebrates rehabilitation of historic Geologic Hogback Point of Interest Trails
News Release
Jefferson County — The Colorado Department of Transportation, in collaboration with project partners, celebrated the rehabilitation of the historic Geologic Hogback Point of Interest Trails along Interstate 70 in Jefferson County with a ribbon-cutting event on Thursday Nov 5.
Located at Mile Point 259.21 along I-70, the north and south trails showcase geological formations exposed during the construction of the interstate. Originally developed in 1969, the trails have served as an outdoor classroom for students, researchers and visitors interested in Colorado’s geological history.
The project rehabilitated more than 2,000 feet of trail to improve pedestrian access, safety and long-term durability while preserving the site’s historic and educational value.
Improvements include drainage enhancements, stabilization of historic features such as the pyramid pylons and railings, upgraded scenic overlooks and seating areas, pedestrian improvements near parking areas, and new interpretive signage developed with input from geological, scientific and educational experts.
“The Point of Geological Interest Trails are a unique resource that connects people with Colorado’s geological history,” said CDOT Executive Director Shoshana Lew. “Through this project, we have improved the visitor experience while preserving the historic features and educational value of the site for future generations.”
“We are excited for the community to enjoy these revitalized trails and improved connections to nearby parks,” said Aaron Roth, Parks and Open Space Director. “This project reflects the strong partnership between Jefferson County, CDOT, and our community partners, and enhances opportunities for residents and visitors to experience and learn about this special part of Jefferson County.”
“Geology shapes Colorado’s landscapes every day, but few places make that history as accessible and awe-inspiring as the I-70 Hogback roadcut,” said Matt Morgan, State Geologist and Director of the Colorado Geological Survey at Colorado School of Mines. “We are thrilled to see this iconic landmark revitalized so future generations can explore the deep-time record right beneath their feet.”
“Kudos for restoring this deep-time rest stop. Now the barcode to the Jurassic is more accessible than ever!” thanked James Hagadorn, Curator of Geology at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science.
The rehabilitation builds on the site’s legacy as a public educational resource while helping ensure the trails remain a place for visitors to explore and learn about Colorado’s geological history for years to come.
