Sept. 8, 2026 - Southeastern Colorado - New median barrier improves safety along this vital corridor

Pueblo County — The Colorado Department of Transportation and its contract partner, Siete, Inc., have completed the installation of cable rail barrier in the median of Interstate 25 north of Pueblo. Crews installed nearly six miles of cable rail between Mile Point 108.5 and MP 114.1.

Other work included grading the median, culvert and inlet cleaning to address drainage concerns, weed barrier placement and updating existing guardrails.

"Completing the installation of high-tension cable rail along I-25 north of Pueblo is a critical safety milestone for our region,” said CDOT Region 2 Transportation Director Shane Ferguson. “These flexible cable barriers are essential for absorbing impact energy and preventing severe, high-speed cross-median collisions along one of our state’s busiest freight and travel corridors. Delivering a safer, better-protected highway for residents, commuters and visitors traveling through Southern Colorado remains CDOT's top priority."

This project significantly improves the safety of motorists along the corridor. The cable rail will act as a barrier, preventing vehicles from crossing the median and entering oncoming traffic lanes.

Work began in early April and was finalized on Aug. 24.

  • Be especially alert at night while driving in work zones.
  • Expect delays, especially during peak travel times.
  • Allow ample space between you and the car in front of you.
  • Anticipate lane shifts and merge when directed to do so.
